A Vision Born in the Woods of Loxley, Alabama
The land that became Steelwood was originally owned by the International Paper Company and consisted of thousands of acres of timberland in central Baldwin County. In 1992, developers Richard and Carol Miller purchased the property with a vision of creating something entirely different from traditional Gulf Coast developments. Rather than building a dense neighborhood, they wanted to preserve the natural landscape and create an exclusive private retreat centered around outdoor recreation and luxury living.
Their vision required an investment of more than $20 million and focused on:
- Preserving the forests and wetlands
- Creating a private lake community
- Developing a championship golf destination
- Building a place where families could escape everyday life and reconnect with nature
Opening of Steelwood
Steelwood Country Club officially opened in 1997 as a gated private community and golf club. Since its opening, it has become one of Alabama’s most highly regarded private clubs and has consistently been recognized among the state’s top golf courses.
The Golf Course Architect
Designed by Jerry Pate
Steelwood’s championship golf course was designed by Jerry Pate, the 1976 U.S. Open Champion and one of the South’s most respected golf course architects.
What’s particularly fascinating is that Baldwin County’s terrain is generally considered relatively flat. Pate transformed the property by creating:
- Significant elevation changes
- Rolling fairways
- Dramatic green complexes
- Strategic wetlands
- Panoramic lake vistas
Golf writers often describe Steelwood as feeling more like a course in the Carolinas or Georgia than the Gulf Coast because of its unexpected topography and scenery.
The Lake
At the heart of the community sits Steelwood Lake, a professionally managed, approximately 200 acre private lake stocked with bass and bream. More than one third of the golf course offers lake views, and the lake itself was designed to be both an amenity and a defining feature of the community.
Today, the lake supports:
Fishing
Electric boating
Wildlife viewing
Sunset views
Waterfront homesites
Why Steelwood Feels Different
Steelwood spans more than 1,500 acres of forests, wetlands, and lakes. The developers intentionally avoided creating a densely populated subdivision. Instead, homesites were designed to preserve privacy and natural beauty.
That design philosophy explains why many visitors say things like:
“You can play 18 holes and hardly see another person.”
“It feels like your own private preserve.”
“It’s hard to believe this is only minutes from Daphne and Fairhope.”
The Outdoor Heritage
Steelwood was designed to embrace Alabama’s sporting traditions. Beyond golf, the community has long offered opportunities for:
Wildlife viewing
Fishing
Scenic trails
Seasonal sporting activities
Championship golf
Pool and fitness amenities
Fine dining and social events
This combination of luxury and outdoor recreation is what makes Steelwood particularly appealing to executives, retirees, second home buyers, and families seeking a private retreat.
